Here's how I sharpen my band blades by hand3/10/14
I use an angle grinder with the blade still on the sawmill. May not be as perfect as one of those band saw blade sharpeners though. I made this video this morning that shows how I do it.
Rod, I've heard of people sharpening blades with an angle grinder, but never tried it. With your good eyes & steady hand, you could have been a surgeon! Do you eyeball the set of the blade too??
Dave, never been to a doctor in my entire adult life Ive had to perform surgery on myself a time or two in my 65 years on this plant. I'll make a video of my tooth setter soon too.
Rod, thanks for posting the video. I'm amazed that you can be consistent enough to get smooth cuts with freehand sharpening. Looking forward to more of your posts.
Harold, right,it 90 dregrees on all the teeth.
Dave, I really have no idea what I'm doing, but in theory they seem like my ideas should work. Sometime they do and sometimes not.
I do it the same way with a grinder but have found over the years, that I get a better grind if I face cut the tooth first and pull through the gullet to the back of the tooth, ergo, backwards from what you are doing in the video.
