Veneer softener

Details on the use of GF-20 veneer softener. June 20, 2001

Q.
Can anyone tell me more about GF-20 veneer softener?

Forum Responses
GF-20 is diethylene glycol monoethyl ether. It's an adhesive modifier. It works very well in flattening veneer. Mix it 50/50 with water. Keep in mind that it will stick veneer together. Separate each sheet with a thin piece of MDF or masonite. I use a vacuum press to apply pressure. Leave it in for a day. Then you must dry the veneer. Put blank newsprint between each sheet, three or four times, and check with a moisture meter. It is a clear liquid but it will take the luster out of rosewood. I use it for burls and crotchwoods.
