Live Today, Don’t Leave Leftovers
Fifteen years ago today, I was the victim of an armed robbery. I worked as a bank teller, and a young man jumped the counter, pointed a gun at each of my coworkers and me, and then took off. On his way out the door he turned and fired, and the bullet went into the wall next to me.
He was caught almost immediately. It took much longer for my coworkers and me to feel normal again.
Feeling like a victim is not fun. It takes a little time, but it’s far better to feel like a survivor.
Survivors have learned things like:
- Always tell people you love them. Whoever they are, if you love them, make sure they know it.
- If you want to be happy, be happy. It really is a choice, and today is worthy of being a good one.
- Enjoy dreaming about the future, but live the hell out of today. Don’t leave leftovers.
- You’ll feel better if you help someone else feel better. I don’t know how that works, but it’s true. I bet it’s magic.
- Don’t spend so much time planning something that you forget to do it.
Whatever your situation, don’t be a victim. Be a survivor.

“Live the hell out of today”…I like that. Methinks that is going to be written on a piece of paper and taped to my mirror…

Thanks for the reminder. I think we all need it at times. I thank God that you are OK and that you have come out on the other side to be such a positive person that I love reading!

Wow! How scary! I’m glad you and all your then-coworkers were OK!
Excellent post, and I couldn’t agree more.

Hi Sarah, I sure did not know this about you. No wonder you are so much fun to be “around”! Thank you for reminding me about love and today. Sometimes I don’t do a very good job of living that way! Thank you.
Great blog, btw.
Love,
David
