WV Staycations - The Purple Fiddle

Recently I packed up my family and met my boss Jeff Turner, his wife Rocky, my friend Kim Wood and their families at Blackwater Falls.  We spent an afternoon climbing up and down the steps and staring at the beautiful falls and then toured the smallest church in the contiguous 48 states, both of which I’ll tell you about in more detail later.

Robinella and Jay ClarkFor now, let’s talk about where we spent the evening, The Purple Fiddle.

The Purple Fiddle is located in the charming little town of Thomas, WV.  If you’d like to sleep over, there is an old fashined guest house right next door called the Fiddler’s Roost.  (This would be classified as a bed and breakfast except you have to walk down the street to Flying Pigs to get breakfast, and you’ll be glad you did.  I recommend the cinnamon waffles.)

The Purple FiddleThe Purple Fiddle is a family-friendly, non-smoking cafe and coffeehouse with live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and some weekdays as well.  We saw Jay Clark and Robinella — and I have been driving my family crazy with my Jay Clark CDs since then!  There is just something about seeing performers live, hearing the stories behind the songs and being able to walk up afterwards to say how much you enjoyed their music.

I would describe the food at The Purple Fiddle, but it would be a disservice if I didn’t direct you to the review by ForkYouBlog instead.  (I turn to them whenever I want to try a new restaurant!)

Very Interesting Coffee HouseThere’s a sweet little patio area for dining or just hanging out.  Play foosball with the kids, send a postcard to a friend (they’re free and they even pay the postage for you!) and be sure to try some of their homemade ice cream!

Kids are truly welcomed here.  This is a wonderful place for kids to be exposed to live music for the first time.  If they get bored and their attention starts to wander, don’t fear.  There is plenty to keep them busy and they will not be viewed as a distraction.  Seriously.

The Purple Fiddle is about three hours away from Putnam county and makes a nice day trip or quick weekend sleep over.  If you stay the night, be sure to walk down to the little river across the street and look for the beavers.  Feel free to browse through more of my pictures from The Purple Fiddle and the town of Thomas in my Flickr set.

Sarah - A great staycation spot! Thomas, and the whole area surrounding it, is a real treasure of the state. The Purple Fiddle is worth the drive even if a stop at Blackwater Falls wasn’t enough. Plus, it is the PURPLE fiddle…

…and you know how much I like purple!
